The Design Story

Pica plays with an irony Besa enjoys: glass, which is made from sand, lined with sand. Each Pica shade starts as clear blown glass with a glossy outside; a band of real fine-grained sand is then applied by hand to the inner surface and sealed with a clear protective coat, so the color shimmers through every granule when lit. The shape itself, tapered with an angled top, has a gentle mid-century feel. Besa’s signature is the glass. American designers work with European craftsmen, every shade is made by hand, and each one is inspected in Ohio before it leaves the factory, so the small variations you see are the mark of a handmade piece, not a flaw.
