“Multiply your floor area by 10 to 20. A 12 by 15 ft living room (180 sq ft) wants roughly 1,800 to 3,600 lumens in total, spread across three or more lamps.”
Designer tip

Do the lumen math in 6 steps
- Measure. Length times width. 12 ft by 15 ft is 180 sq ft.
- Multiply by 10 to 20. Super Bright LEDs lists 10 to 20 foot-candles (lumens per sq ft) for living rooms. Use 10 for cozy, 20 for bright. It's a rule of thumb, not a law.
- Give most of it to one big lamp. A tall uplighter can cover half or more of your total by bouncing light off the ceiling.
- Add a reading lamp and a glow lamp. Around 450 to 900 lumens next to the sofa, plus something small for shelves and corners.
- Add up the listed lumens. Check each lamp's lumen figure. Shades and indirect light lose some, so round up a little.
- Buy dimmable, then dial down. It's easier to dim a bright room than to brighten a dim one. Every pick below is dimmable.

Frequently asked questions
How many lumens is a 60-watt bulb?
About 800 lumens, per ENERGY STAR. A 40-watt equivalent is about 450.
Is 3,000 lumens too bright for a living room?
Not for a typical 150 to 300 sq ft room; that sits inside the 10 to 20 lumens per sq ft rule of thumb. Put it on a dimmer and you can always go lower.
Do lumens from different lamps add up?
Roughly, yes. Add each lamp's lumens for your total, and round up a little because shades and bounced light lose some.
How many lamps should a living room have?
Three or more at different heights is a good rule of thumb: one ambient uplighter, one reading lamp, one accent or glow lamp.
What's the difference between lumens and watts?
Lumens measure brightness; watts measure energy used. LEDs give more lumens per watt, so shop by lumens.
