Noguchi 1944 Plexiglas Chess Set, IC Design — It is chess as Noguchi saw it: light passes through the pieces and they glow on the black board.
An authorized IC Design edition of a 1944 design.
The Design Story
In 1944 Isamu Noguchi had little to work with, so he slotted thin sheets of a brand-new material, Plexiglas, into each other to make solid-looking figures. Their red and green echo gemstones in Mughal jewelry, and the dotted board nods to inlaid Persian game tables. His pieces vanished; this edition, made with the Noguchi Museum, brings them back.
Why You’ll Love It
It is chess as Noguchi saw it: light passes through the pieces and they glow on the black board. The circular inlays change how the board reads at a glance. Folded, it stores flat; open, it is the most sculptural object on the table.
Made for Real Life
Looking after it is simple: a soft cloth now and then, no water, and a spot out of strong sunlight. Pair it with Man Ray Chess Pieces and Board Set, Man Ray 17-Inch Wooden Chess Board, Man Ray Beech Wood Chess Pieces.
