MAKOTO Sculptural Vase by Carsten Gollnick for blomus — A compact matte stoneware vase whose narrow opening holds a single stem or branch upright.
Part of MAKOTO, Carsten Gollnick’s Japanese-inspired stoneware for the German design house blomus, made in Portugal.
The Design Story

Gollnick drew the vase as the sculptural companion to MAKOTO dinnerware: the same low cylinder and floating foot, closed into a narrow neck. It is made for the Japanese way with flowers, one branch, carefully placed. Gollnick, born in 1966, has run his own studio in Germany since 1997 and has drawn on Japanese design for his whole career. He works by a simple rule taken from that tradition: no object outranks another, since even the smallest piece has a purpose. More than 100 products and awards from iF, the German Design Award and Red Dot have come out of that studio.
Why You’ll Love It
It makes one stem look intentional. The narrow opening does the arranging for you, holding a branch at the angle you choose. On a dining table it sits low enough not to block anyone’s view, and next to MAKOTO plates it ties the table together. Empty, it is a calm, tactile object on a shelf.
Made for Real Life
Our advice: rinse by hand and change the water every few days for fresh stems. Each piece is unique: small variations appear during firing and give every piece its character. Pairs well with the footed serving bowls, pedestal plates.

Questions We Hear Most
How do I style the MAKOTO vase?
Go minimal: one branch or two stems at an angle, in the Japanese way. Group it with a MAKOTO serving bowl or stack of plates for a still life on a shelf.
Is the MAKOTO vase too small for a dinner table?
It’s low on purpose, so guests can see each other over it. Use two or three down a long table.
Which MAKOTO vase glaze should I pick?
Moonbeam reads light and textured, like the moon’s surface; Elephant Skin is smooth, matte and gray. Both look good with green branches.
Can the MAKOTO vase stand empty?
Yes. Its floating base and matte glaze make it a small sculpture on its own.
Is the MAKOTO vase a good housewarming gift?
Yes: it’s compact, works in any room and fits Japandi, Scandinavian and minimalist homes.
When will my MAKOTO vase ship?
It usually leaves within 2–3 business days of your order.

Why We Love It
Every piece is a little different from the kiln, and the floating base turns an everyday table into a composition. From a small town in Germany’s old steel region, the Blome family has gone from bicycle parts (1921) to metal gifts (1961) to the design label blomus (2000), still family-run in its fourth generation. LoftModern is an authorized blomus retailer.
