TRITTICO CENTO3 Pen & Pencil Set by EGOUNDESIGN — the complete set of Achille Castiglioni’s last design: three 3D-printed writing instruments in one box.
Designed in 2001 by Achille Castiglioni and Gianfranco Cavaglià; produced by EGOUNDESIGN in Bologna.
The Design Story
Castiglioni and Cavaglià wanted to draw attention back to the pencil and the pen as everyday tools for ideas. In 2001 they designed a family of instruments around a three-arched section and had them carved in wood by Pier Luigi Ghianda’s workshop. Twenty years later EGOUNDESIGN found the technique the drawings had been waiting for: additive manufacturing, which builds each piece layer by layer with no waste, in a PLA filament enriched with graphene. The collection was presented in 2021, 103 years after Castiglioni’s birth: hence CENTO3.
Why You’ll Love It
Opening TRITTICO feels like opening an archive drawer. Three instruments lie side by side in their soft-touch box, each with the same three-lobed body, each with its own job: the multifunction tool for everyday notes, the fountain pen for words that matter, the mechanical pencil for precise lines.
Made for Real Life
Keep the box on the desk and the instruments in rotation. For a pocket version of the multifunction kit, see TRILObyME Pocket Atelier, CENTO3 Design by EGOUNDESIGN.

Questions We Hear Most
Why is it called TRITTICO, and what does CENTO3 mean?
TRITTICO means triptych: three instruments in one set. CENTO3 counts the 103 years from Castiglioni’s birth in 1918 to the project’s presentation in 2021, and the number three recurs everywhere, from the three fingers that hold a pen to the three arches of its section.
How does a graphene-PLA pen feel in the hand?
Light and warm, with a fine ribbed texture left by the 3D-printing layers, so it grips without slipping.
Where did the CENTO3 instruments come from?
From wooden prototypes made in 2001 for Castiglioni and Cavaglià by Pier Luigi Ghianda’s workshop, kept for twenty years in the Castiglioni archive.
Which TRITTICO instrument should I start with? (our advice)
The multifunction CENTO3.E for everyday notes and sketches, the mechanical pencil for precise drawing, and the pocket fountain pen for signatures and letters.
Where does the TRITTICO set look best? (our styling advice)
Open on a walnut or oak desk, in a studio, or on a bookshelf beside design monographs; the box is made to stay on display.
Who is TRITTICO for?
Collectors of Italian design, architects and anyone who still writes by hand and wants tools with a story.
