Hippo Rattle by Eguchi Toys is a first toy that also looks like a small piece of design: a smooth walnut-and-beech hippo with a gentle rocking shape, with a metal ball inside that rattles softly.
Eguchi Toys designs its baby pieces around how infants actually explore: sound, touch and something reassuring to hold.
The Design Story
Eguchi Toys describes its rattles as objects of comfort: through sound, touch and a sense of companionship they can help settle a baby during the fussy, unsettled stages of the first months. Founder Kentaro Eguchi, a Montessori teacher, keeps them simple on purpose, so the material and the sound do the work.
Kentaro Eguchi trained as a fine artist at New York's School of Visual Arts, then spent decades in early-childhood classrooms: he is a qualified Montessori teacher and opened Ivy's House Montessori kindergarten in Taipei in 1997. In 2015 he started Eguchi Toys, where designers, carpenters and preschool educators work side by side, and the pieces have since travelled to Maison&Objet Paris and the Nuremberg International Toy Fair.
