Artemide in Glass and Light: Empatia, Zephyr and the Lunar Calipso Collections

Glass has always been lighting's most honest material. It does not hide the source; it shapes it. In an era of flat LED panels and anonymous downlights, the most design-literate interiors are returning to fixtures where you can see the craft in the diffuser itself. Few houses do this with more intelligence than Artemide.

This is a closer look at three Artemide collections LoftModern has never featured before: Empatia and Zephyr, both built around hand-blown glass, and Calipso, a precision-molded honeycomb that reads like glass and behaves like optics. Together they show how one Milanese brand turns the oldest lighting material and the newest light source into the same conversation.

Artemide's Approach: The Diffuser Is the Design

Artemide has spent more than six decades proving that a lamp's beauty and its performance should come from the same decision. Its best-known icons, from the Tolomeo to the Tizio, are mechanical; the arm is the idea. The three collections below take the opposite route. Their idea lives in the diffuser: the vessel of glass or the fractal grid that sits between the LED and your eye.

That shift matters in a modern interior. LEDs are tiny, intense points of light. Left bare, they glare. The craft is in spreading that light so it feels as soft as a candle and as even as daylight, without wasting it. Each of these collections solves that problem in a different, beautiful way.

Empatia: Venetian Glass, Lit From Within

Artemide Empatia 16 hand-blown glass LED pendant light

Presented at Milan Design Week in 2013, Empatia is the work of Carlotta de Bevilacqua and Paola di Arianello. Its outer bowl is mouth-blown Venetian glass that shifts in an ombré from clear to frosted. The surprise is inside. Instead of a bulb, a slender light "pipe" rises through the center of the glass, carrying light from LEDs hidden in the base. A white plate at the top reflects it back down, so the whole vessel glows evenly, 360 degrees, with no visible source.

The result is a lamp that looks like an object first and a light second, which is exactly why it works in living rooms, primary suites and hotel lobbies alike.

  • Empatia 16 Pendant: a compact 6 5/16-inch glass globe that hangs alone over a nightstand or in a row over an island. An extended 216-inch cable option suits double-height spaces.
  • Empatia 16 Table Lamp: the most intimate size, giving 530 lumens of warm 3000K light for a bedside, a console or a reception desk.
  • Empatia 26 Table Lamp: the mid-size, with 710 lumens from a 16W LED, scaled for a sideboard or a living room end table.

  • Empatia 36 Table Lamp: the statement size at just over 14 inches across, with 1,189 lumens and a touch dimmer in its die-cast aluminum base.
  • Empatia 36 Wall/Ceiling Light: the same glowing vessel mounted flat, for hallways and dining rooms where a pendant would interrupt the sightline.

Zephyr: The Chandelier, Reconsidered

Artemide Zephyr modular hand-blown glass LED chandelier by Carlo Colombo

If Empatia is a single vessel, Zephyr is a constellation. Designed by Carlo Colombo and honored with an Archiproducts Design Award in 2024, it is Artemide's answer to a question many designers have stopped asking: what should a chandelier be now?

Colombo's answer is a suspended sculpture of hand-blown glass diffusers with a wavy edge and alternating clear and opaline stripes. Those stripes are not decoration alone. They break up the LED so the light arrives soft and glare-free, while the clear bands keep each diffuser lively and reflective. A steel frame with rotating ring connectors lets the system grow into different configurations, so the same family can light a dining table, a stair void or a hotel lounge.

  • Zephyr Chandelier: the full sculptural expression, over 43 inches across with 13,091 lumens of 3000K light (CRI above 90). Available in black or bronze, it is a true centerpiece for a great room or a hospitality lobby.
  • Zephyr Linear Suspension: about 63 inches long, the format for a long dining table, a boardroom or a kitchen island. An extended suspension option reaches 240 inches for tall ceilings.

  • Zephyr Table Lamp: a single striped glass cylinder about 12 inches tall with touch dimming, in black or polished aluminum. It is the easiest way to bring the collection into a bedroom, study or hotel suite.

Calipso: A Lunar Counterpoint to Glass

Artemide Calipso lunar honeycomb LED pendant by Neil Poulton

Calipso is not glass, and that is the point of including it here. Where Empatia and Zephyr diffuse light through a blown vessel, Neil Poulton's Calipso diffuses it through structure. Poulton fed a photograph of the moon into an image-based algorithm he found on an old, all-but-extinct computer. The output became an organic honeycomb of circles in varying diameters: a fractal, "impure geometry" that looks random but is precisely controlled.

Molded in durable ASA, that honeycomb works as an optic. It delivers direct light that stays comfortable to look at, with a CRI above 90 for true color. The linear versions are rated UGR below 19 for glare control, a professional standard that makes them as suitable for offices and conference rooms as for kitchens.

  • Calipso Pendant: a slim disc under 21 inches across and only 2.25 inches deep, producing about 2,884 lumens in 2700K or 3000K.
  • Calipso Wall/Ceiling Light: the same lunar face mounted flush, 3 inches deep, for corridors, bedrooms and lobbies.

Practical Questions

Is hand-blown glass practical for everyday use?

Yes. Empatia and Zephyr diffusers are made to be lived with, not just admired. Because each piece is mouth-blown, small variations in thickness and tone are a mark of the craft rather than a flaw. Dust with a soft, dry microfiber cloth and, when needed, clean with a mild glass cleaner applied to the cloth with the power off.

Which collection is best over a dining table?

For a long rectangular table, choose a linear format: the Zephyr Linear for sculptural presence or the Calipso Linear for crisp, glare-controlled light. For a round table, a single Calipso Pendant or the Zephyr Chandelier sized to roughly half to two-thirds the table's width creates a natural focal point. Hang the bottom of the fixture about 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop.

Are these fixtures dimmable?

Yes. The Empatia and Zephyr table lamps dim by touch, and the hardwired pendants, wall and ceiling lights are dimmable with a compatible LED dimmer. The Calipso Linear models support 0-10V dimming, which is common in commercial projects. Check each product page for the exact control type before ordering.

Can Calipso and Zephyr be used in commercial projects?

They were designed with that in mind. Calipso's UGR below 19 and high CRI meet the visual comfort expectations of offices and conference rooms. Zephyr's modular system and high output make it a natural fit for hotel lobbies, restaurants and boardrooms, while the Empatia table lamps are a favorite for reception desks and suites.

Why is Calipso grouped with glass collections if it is not glass?

Because all three share one philosophy: the diffuser is the design. Empatia and Zephyr achieve it with hand-blown glass; Calipso achieves it with an algorithmic honeycomb. Seeing them side by side makes it easier to choose the right character of light for each room.

Why These Collections Belong in a Considered Interior

A fixture you see every day should reward a second look. Each of these collections does. Empatia's glow seems to come from nowhere. Zephyr's stripes catch the light differently from every angle. Calipso's honeycomb reveals its lunar origin only when you know to look for it. That depth is what separates collectible design from decoration.

There is also a practical case. Every piece here is integrated LED, rated for tens of thousands of hours, with color quality that keeps materials and skin tones looking true. You are buying the craft once and the performance for years. And because each collection spans pendants, table lamps and wall or ceiling versions, you can carry a single design language from the entry to the dining room to the bedroom.

How Glass Transforms a Room

Light through glass is never quite still. It pools, it refracts, it softens an edge. Place an Empatia 36 on a console and the hallway gains a warm, lantern-like presence. Hang a Zephyr over the table and dinner happens inside a sculpture. Mount a Calipso in a quiet corridor and the ceiling becomes a small, luminous moon.

These are the details guests remember without knowing why: a room that feels composed rather than simply lit. That is design that leads, not follows.
