Within a few years Gropius had specified his lamps for the new Bauhaus in Dessau, and Breuer, Albers and Moholy-Nagy worked under them. A century on, the same family of lamps is built in Germany on the original tooling.

Why You’ll Love It

There is something satisfying about a lamp that shows how it works. Two springs, two arms, a toggle that clicks: the Spring Balanced moves smoothly and stays put, and in white it looks fresh in any room. It is a 1950s design still built in Germany the same way.

Made for Real Life

Heavy enough to stay steady, easy to aim with one hand. For the desk, its Bauhaus ancestor is TYP 113 Bauhaus Clamp Lamp by Curt Fischer for Midgard. Lamp off and cool, then a dry microfibre cloth. A barely damp cloth with mild soap lifts marks on enamel or powder coat; skip scouring pads and solvents, and keep water away from the electrics.

Product Details

Era

Midgard design from the 1950s

Colour

White

Shade

Aluminium, spun and powder-coated, 20 cm across (7.87 in)

Arms

49.5 cm and 60 cm (19.5 / 23.6 in), spring balanced

Base

Steel disc, 30 cm across (11.8 in)

Body

Steel, powder-coated

Switch

Chrome toggle on the head

Weight

9.1 kg (20 lb)

Bulb

E26, up to 60 W

Cable

152 cm (60 in), textile

Use

Indoors

Origin

Assembled by hand in Germany

Item no.

MD-44.6.24

Where It Shines

Next to an armchair, at the end of a sofa, by a desk or easel.

Questions We Hear Most

How old is the Spring Balanced design?

Midgard has produced it since the 1950s, making it one of the brand’s post-war classics.

What holds the Spring Balanced head in place?

Exposed steel tension springs balance the arms, so the head stays exactly where you set it.

What are the Spring Balanced lamp’s measurements in centimetres?

Arms of about 49.5 and 60 cm, a 30 cm base and a 20 cm shade; it weighs about 9 kg.

Which bulb suits the Spring Balanced lamp?

An E26 bulb up to 60 W; a warm LED makes it a cosy reading light.

Where does the Spring Balanced lamp work best?
