IC Design’s edition pairs his pieces with a board built for them. The set goes back to an original that now belongs to the Met in New York; Man Ray reduced each piece to a basic solid, and the knight borrows its curl from a violin head.

Why You’ll Love It

It is a chess set that works as a sculpture when nobody is playing. The pieces read as a small family of geometric forms rather than carved figures, and the board gives them a crisp black-and-natural stage. Buying both together means the colors and scale match exactly.

Made for Real Life

Pair it with Man Ray 17-Inch Wooden Chess Board, Man Ray Beech Wood Chess Pieces, Cy Endfield 1972 Folding Travel Chess Set.

Product Details

Maker

IC Design (Zurich)

Product

Man Ray Chess Set with Board

Designed by

Man Ray, 1920s

Made from

Pieces: solid beech wood, clear lacquered and black painted, wool felt pads; board: veneered wood, clear lacquered and black painted, wool felt bottom

In the box

32 chess pieces + chess board, each gift boxed

Piece heights

King and queen 3.25"; knight 2"; rook and pawn 1.4"; other pieces up to 2.75"

Board

17" × 17" × 0.75"

Country of origin

Germany

IC Design item no.

IC-MRC-SET

Where It Shines

Place it on a coffee table in the living room, a library shelf or a games table in the study.

Questions We Hear Most

Who designed the Man Ray Chess Pieces and Board Set?

Man Ray, 1920s.
