kumi-rice-noodle-bowls-japanese-style
KUMI Rice & Noodle Bowls, Japanese Style, by blomus

KUMI Rice & Noodle Bowls, Japanese Style, by blomus — Flared, reactive-glazed stoneware bowls in four sizes, from a 1.5 oz soy dish to a 26 oz noodle bowl.

Part of KUMI, the Japanese-inspired, reactive-glazed stoneware collection from the German design house blomus.

The Design Story

These are the shapes of a Japanese meal: a rice bowl to lift in one hand, a deeper bowl for broth and a tiny dish for soy sauce. KUMI is a studio blomus design, created by the brand’s own team in Sundern.

KUMI is blomus looking east. The forms are Japanese in origin and the surface comes from reactive glazing, a process that never repeats itself: the glaze reacts to oxygen in the kiln and settles into its own pattern of flecks and shading on every piece. According to blomus, the name is a Japanese word for eternal beauty. Two natural colors, dark-brown Espresso and mushroom-toned Fungi, are made to sit side by side.

Why You’ll Love It

The flared shape is comfortable to cup in your palms. The large bowl gives ramen or a poke bowl proper depth. Sold singly, the sizes are easy to combine. The speckled glaze makes plain food look good.

Made for Real Life

Dishwasher and microwave safe, according to blomus. Dots, flecks and uneven tones come from the reactive glaze and differ on every piece; blomus notes that KUMI gains character with use over time. Pairs well with the plates, sharing bowl, tea cup.

Product Details

Maker

blomus (Sundern, Germany)

Collection

KUMI

Designed by

studio blomus

What it is

Reactive-glazed stoneware bowls, sold individually

Color options

Espresso, Fungi

Size: large bowl

6.7" × 3.4" (17 × 8.5 cm); holds 26 fl oz (about 770 ml) — available in Espresso, Fungi

Size: medium bowl

5.5" × 3" (14 × 7.5 cm); holds 16 fl oz (about 475 ml) — available in Espresso, Fungi

Size: small bowl

4.7" × 2.8" (12 × 7 cm); holds 8 fl oz (about 235 ml) — available in Espresso, Fungi

Size: x-small bowl

3.2" × 1" (8 × 2.5 cm); holds 1.5 fl oz (about 45 ml) — available in Espresso, Fungi

Pieces included

1 bowl

Made from

Ceramic stoneware with reactive glaze

Care

Dishwasher and microwave safe

blomus item no.

Espresso large bowl: 64417; Espresso medium bowl: 64416; Espresso small bowl: 64415; Espresso x-small bowl: 64414; Fungi large bowl: 64461; Fungi medium bowl: 64460; Fungi small bowl: 64433; Fungi x-small bowl: 64432

Where It Shines

It looks at home at a ramen night, holding rice beside a stir-fry, on a breakfast table with granola, or as a catch-all on a coffee table.

Questions We Hear Most

Which KUMI bowl is the rice bowl?

The Small bowl: 4.7" across, 8 fl oz, sized to hold in one hand.

What is the tiny KUMI bowl for?

The X-Small bowl holds 1.5 fl oz and is meant for soy sauce; it also suits dips, salt or wasabi.

Can KUMI bowls be used for hot soup?

Yes, they are stoneware and microwave safe.

Why can the KUMI bowls show specks or uneven color?

That is the reactive glaze at work.
